World of Ice Giants
Werfen’s World of Ice Giants (40 km south of Salzburg), a gigantic cave system in Salzburg’s Tennengebirge range, captivates visitors with its powerful ice sculptures, created by Mother Nature herself. The cave was only discovered at the beginning of the last century. A cable car runs all the way up to the entrance, from where visitors are treated to breathtaking views of Salzachtal Valley and the alpine scenery of the Hohe Tauern. If you prefer a sportier option, you can also tackle the 500 vertical meters from the valley to the mountain terminal on foot. The hike up takes about 1 ½ hrs.
Wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing (cap and gloves). At the entrance, visitors are issued miners’ lamps. The walking tour spans 134 vertical meters, with steps in some parts.
