Before the Alps begin, gentle hills are waiting to be explored around and to the north of Salzburg city. Moving south of the city, the first of the higher mountains can be seen soaring skywards. The Tennengebirge range rises to karst plateaux and is only a few minutes' drive away, and the demanding alpine routes of the Hohe Tauern National Park can be reached in an hour by car. There is something for walkers of all tastes in this beautiful corner of Austria - the height of the peaks of Salzburg Province ranges from 500 metres to the 3,798 metres of the Großglockner.

There are 7,200 kilometres of well-marked walking paths in Salzburg Province, and many of them lead through the unspoilt natural scenery and impressive surroundings treasured by those who live here. Over ten percent of the total area of Salzburg Province enjoys close protection as part of its National Park status. Indeed, a good thirty percent of the province is protected in some way because of its natural beauty.
