Mount Untersberg

Take the cable car up to Mount Untersberg. A mountain surrounded by countless legends of goblins, dwarves, and untold riches.

The mountain's awe-inspiring shape has given rise to legends, fairytales, and horror stories since time immemorial. Wrapped in dark forests, the cliffs of the Untersberg soar up from the surrounding area of drained moorland and conceal gigantic cave systems below the surface. Even today, some of the caverns and tunnels remain unexplored.

Legend has it that goblins and dwarves guard a hoard of unimaginable treasures deep inside the Untersberg.. In the fairytale books, we read that the forests on the mountain are home to giants and mysterious women of supernatural beauty. Another legendary presence to have chosen the Untersberg as its home is the Wild Hunt, mysterious bringer of storm and wind when it appears.

Most famous of all the legends, however, is the tale of Charlemagne. He, so the story goes, lies sleeping inside the Untersberg. So long as the ravens continue to circle the peak, we have nothing to fear. But if one day they disappear, it will be a sign that the emperor has awoken from his sleep.
