Eight kilometres south of the festival city of Salzburg, Grödig is a destination for the discerning holidaymaker. It lies in a rural setting near the foot of the mightiest of Salzburg's local hills, the Untersberg, and is perfectly positioned for a holiday that has everything. Surrounded by peaceful countryside to relax in, Grödig is only a short distance from the delights of the nearby festival city of Salzburg, and lies at the centre of a ring of the best attractions in Salzburg and neighbouring Bavaria. From Grödig it is only a short drive by car to Hellbrunn Palace, Hellbrunn Zoo, Hellbrunn's world-famous trick fountains, the Salzburg World of Salt, the Salzburg Open-Air Museum, the Königssee lake, the Werfen World of Ice, and many other attractions.
The Grödig district is divided into the villages of Grödig itself, St. Leonhard, Eichet, Glanegg, and Fürstenbrunn. This picturesque community at the foot of the Untersberg is the starting point of many walking routes (the Dopplersteig and easier Reitsteig routes and the ice caves path) and also the site of the valley station of the Untersberg cable-car. Take the gondola from St. Leonhard to reach the summit of the 1,850 metre high Untersberg.
Grödig is also home to the Untersberg Marble Museum. Visit the museum to learn about the history of the valuable rock inside the mountain and discover the legends that envelop the Untersberg. Rough blocks of marble hewn from the Untersberg are transformed into smooth marble spheres in the Grödig Marble Smoothing Centre, where the power of water is used to give the rock a smooth and rounded surface.
Your holiday
Traditional customs are ingrained in the consciousness of the local people. Numerous associations keep folk art alive and make sure historical rituals are not forgotten. You can experience the results of their work if you visit Grödig on a day when one of the many festivals and ceremonies is taking place. The Grödig Folk Theatre also entertains locals and guests from far and near.
Grödig has plenty to offer visitors in search of sport and fitness. As well as providing facilities for more conventional sports, Grödig gives you the opportunity to try action-packed outdoor activities. A special thrill awaits those who avail of the opportunity to go rafting, canyoning, or paragliding.
Cycling enthusiasts are drawn to Grödig because of the dense network of cycle tracks and mountain bike trails, and the local bike hire service will cater for all your needs. Golf can be played nearby - golfers are attracted by the nine-hole course at Rif and, further afield, the demanding courses of Schloss Kleßheim and Eugendorf. We have not forgotten tennis either; the Tennispoint tennis centre in neighbouring Anif has everything tennis players could wish for. Only ten kilometres away, across the border in Bavaria, the Watzmann-Therme leisure pool is popular among young and old alike.
